In the parables of the book of Enoch, the Son of Man is a mysterious being who dwells with God and possesses righteousness. He must come at the end of times when he will sit on his throne of glory, universal judge, savior and avenger of the righteous who will come to him after the resurrection. Fig., A son of the earth, A peasant stick man. The king of the Davidic dynasty is sometimes called the Son of God (2 Samuel 7:14; Ps 2:7; 89.27 s; See 110.3(n). But all the people of Israel are also designated in the same way (Ex 4:22ff; Jeremiah 3:19; 31.9,20; Operating System 11.1; cf. Dt 14:1; 32.5 sec.19; Isaiah 43:6; 45.11; Operating System 2.1; see also Isaiah 63:16; 64.7; Jeremiah 3:4; ml 2.10; the relationship between another people and their God can be expressed in the same way, 21:29; cf. Jeremiah 2:26s; ML 2.11). In Sirachs* 4:10, the name « Son of the Most High » is reserved for the exact; this may have already been the case in Psalm 73:15. In Wisdom * 2:15ff. This applies especially to suffering. In a fairly general sense, some New Testament texts seem to assume that all men are sons of God (Luke 3:38; Acts 17:28). However, this faithfulness is generally not taken for granted (Matthew 5:9, 45; Lk 6:35; 20.36; Rev 2:26ff; 21:7).

Paul very clearly links the status of the Son of God to the connection with Christ (Romans 8:3ff; Galatians 4:4ff). For him, it is through childish adoption, sometimes described as present but secret (Romans 8:15, 19; Galatians 4:5; cf. Eph 1:5), sometimes like the future (Rom 8:23), may men become children of God in Jesus Christ (Gal 3:26ff; cf. Jn 1:12). If, in everyday language, « Son of man » means man or man (cf. N 23,19n; God therefore solemnly calls the prophet Ezekiel throughout His book, 2,1n,3,6,8, etc.; cf. also Ps 8:5; Dn 8:17), the term Son of Man would experience an unexpected development from the apocalyptic vision of Dn 7:13ff, where, after a succession of extraterrestrial powers represented by wild beasts, power is finally given to someone resembling a man (lit. like the Son of Man) who arrives with the clouds of heaven.

The interpretation of the vision formally identifies this Son of Man with the people of the Saints of the Most High (verses 18:22, 27). But this figure of the son of a famous man, associated with the end times, will find its way independently in apocalyptic literature (see the introduction to the Apocalypse of John, p. 1667), especially in the book of Enoch (1 Enoch* 37-71) and in the Fourth Ezra (4 Ezra* 13). Whether or not these texts, whose dating remains uncertain, directly influenced the New Testament, they at least testify to the important role that the Son of Man played in the Jewish expectations of the time. This expression is often associated with the precariousness of man, his fragility, his smallness before God. But it is also linked to God`s plan: this little man, this « earthy », God makes him Lord of creation and of the height of his gifts. The psalmist can then exclaim with astonishment, « What is man that you may remember him, the Son of man, that you may take care of him? » (Psalm 8:5). In the Gospels, it is always Jesus himself who calls himself the Son of Man (elsewhere the term refers only indirectly, in the context of a vision, to Acts 7:56; Rev. 1.13; 14:14, or a quotation, Hebrews 2:6).

In some cases, the formula can be interpreted in its banal sense (« man » as opposed to God Mk 2:7, 10 or animals Mt 8:20n; in Matthew 11:18 one can possibly understand the Son of man in the sense of « someone »). Elsewhere, however, the allusion to Dn 7 and, more generally, to the figure of the Son of the heavenly man associated with the end times is evident (Matthew 10:23; 24:27, 37/; Mk 8:38; 13.26//; 14.62ff//; Luke 18:8; Notice that in some of these passages, Jesus does not seem to identify exactly with this Son of Man; On the contrary, in a way, he goes beyond his future beyond his death). As a counterpoint to this glorious representation, Jesus likes to describe his humiliation and suffering in the Synoptic Gospels as those of the Son of Man (Matthew 12:40; Mk 8:31; 9.31; 10.33,45; 14.21; Luke 22:48; this is an analogous paradox highlighted in the quotation from Hebrews 2:6, cf. v. 8(s). The two lines are deliberately mixed in the Gospel of John, where Jesus` crucifixion is the « exaltation » by which the Son of Man ascends to heaven from whence he came (John 3:13ff; 5:27n; 9:35; 6:27; 5:53; 8:28; 12:23ff,34). Paul, on the other hand, does not use the term Son of man, but repeatedly draws a parallel between the original man and Jesus, the last Adam (Romans 5:12ff; 1 Corinthians 15:21; 27ff.; cf. Col 1:15ff.).

In fact, it can be understood in a banal sense: Jesus is « Son of Man », in the sense that he is fully human, rooted in a descendant, linked to a family, friends, a profession, a village. He lives discreetly without claiming his divine lineage. But the phrase also contains a clear allusion to the apocalyptic that every Jew is likely to hear.
