Bronx Legal Services is part of Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) that fights poverty and seeks justice for low-income New Yorkers. For more than 40 years, we have fought systemic injustice and helped our clients meet basic needs for housing, access to quality education, health care, family stability, income and economic security. LSNYC is the largest civil law service provider in the country with deep roots in every community in which we operate. Our neighborhood offices and convenience sites in the five boroughs help more than 70,000 New Yorkers each year. LSNYC leverages its limited resources with a number of pro bono partnerships across all of our practice areas. The Legal Aid Society is a private, non-profit legal advisory organization, the oldest and largest in the country, dedicated to providing high-quality legal representation to low-income New Yorkers since 1876. Bronx Legal Services focuses primarily on the prevention of evictions before the Housing Court and related administrative procedures. The housing unit represents tenants in cases of non-payment and maintenance, termination by NYCHA of rent lawsuits, administrative hearings related to housing subsidies, and proceedings requiring repairs in unsafe conditions. The unit also pursues targeted advocacy and litigation in state and federal courts on behalf of individuals, tenant groups or other entities focused on equitable housing and housing affordability. As part of the Housing Unit`s overall advocacy approach, the practice touches on a variety of related issues, including public benefits, family and foreclosure laws.
